Types of mechanism of managing business processes in ensuring economic security of an enterprise

It is shown that the use of business process management mechanisms as a management tool to ensure an enterprise’s economic security is a common approach in micro-level economic security studies. Specific management actions are identified and described as outcomes of the business process management mechanism to ensure the enterprise’s economic security. These management actions include identifying threats and risks, responding to them to overcome them, monitoring and periodically assessing them, identifying threats through weak signals, learning from past mistakes, stress-testing responses to threats and risks, mitigating their impact, and improving the mechanisms mentioned above. For each highlighted management action, its content is disclosed, and the required results are specified. Types of business process management mechanisms for ensuring the enterprise’s economic security — basic, extended, reflexive, and proactive — are proposed, along with descriptions of each. It is shown that the basic mechanism is the simplest type, providing for the implementation of a minimal set of reactions and perceiving a limited number of signals. The extended mechanism can perform more management reactions and perceive a greater number of signals, including incipient or implicit expressions. The reflexive mechanism, in addition to the functionality of the basic and extended mechanisms, involves elements and procedures for reflecting on previous experience in implementing business processes. And the proactive mechanism, in addition to the functionality of all other mechanisms, ensures a proactive response to potential signals that trigger business processes, threats, and risks, as well as proactive improvement of the implemented business processes. The execution of defined management actions for each of the highlighted types of business process management mechanisms to ensure the enterprise’s economic security is demonstrated, from the basic mechanism, which involves only identifying threats and risks and reacting to them, to the proactive mechanism, which encompasses the implementation of all defined management actions. Suggestions for selecting a business process management mechanism to ensure the enterprise’s economic security are presented in a matrix based on the combination of enterprise size and the level of turbulence in its external environment. It is shown that the larger the enterprise and the more turbulent its external environment, the more functional and complex the business process management mechanism should be to ensure the enterprise’s economic security.
