Resource determinants of social capital formation in multiethnic communities of Transcarpathia

The article substantiates the resource determinants of social capital formation in the mountain territories of Transcarpathia. It systematizes the mechanisms through which resources are transformed into collective action, institutional trust, and the socio-economic resilience of communities. The relevance of the study arises from the combined effects of spatial remoteness, limited access to public services, migration, financial constraints, and wartime risks, all of which reshape horizontal and vertical relations in mountain communities. The methodological framework combines systems and resource-based approaches, structural and logical generalization, comparative analysis, descriptive statistics, and content analysis of recent studies on social cohesion. The empirical basis comprises the results of a 2020–2021 survey conducted in mountain settlements of the Uzhhorod, Mukachevo, Khust, Tiachiv, and Rakhiv districts of Transcarpathia. The study develops a three-component model of social capital accumulation in which a digital and communication contour supplements resource, environmental, and outcome components. A contradiction is evident between relatively high levels of informal mutual assistance and weak institutionalization of civic participation: 59.7% of respondents donated to charitable causes periodically. In comparison, only 8% belonged to civil society organizations. The average share of respondents expressing complete trust in family and relatives was 48.31%, whereas only 2.04% completely trusted their neighbors. The findings indicate that bonding social capital is predominantly concentrated in family networks, while bridging and linking ties with civil society organizations, businesses, and public institutions remain underdeveloped. A policy framework is proposed that combines investment in human capital and mental health, digital inclusion, community spaces, transparent public services, support for volunteering, cross-sector partnerships, and local development funds. The results can support recovery programs, development strategies for mountain communities, and monitoring systems for social cohesion.
