The article examines the theoretical foundations of human capital formation as a key factor in the sustainable development of rural territories. In the face of rapid outflow of qualified personnel, demographic aging, and limited access to basic social services, traditional models of territorial management prove insufficient. They continue to focus primarily on material and technical infrastructure, while systematically underestimating the investment nature of human capital — the very resource that ultimately determines the ability of communities to self-reproduce and adapt in an unstable post-war environment. The study traces the evolution of scientific views on human capital from the classical provisions that laid the groundwork for the investment approach to contemporary international studies. The latter highlight the role of human capital in mitigating the consequences of globalization, urbanization, and environmental challenges. Ukrainian scholars actively adapt these ideas to national realities; however, their works frequently remain within the realm of general theoretical constructs. Empirical assessments focused specifically on rural territories, taking into account regional disparities, are still relatively rare. The paper reveals the integrative essence of human capital as a result of the interaction among economic, intellectual, social, cultural, administrative, and financial factors. It identifies the structure of human potential in territorial communities through socio-demographic, labor, entrepreneurial, and innovative components, with particular attention paid to the synergistic effects arising from their combination. The main approaches to assessing human capital – index-based, cost-based, component (structural), productive, and territorial – are systematized. Based on this classification, the key groups of indicators for evaluating the development of human capital in rural areas are identified. Such systematization provides a necessary methodological foundation for further empirical analysis of trends in human capital reproduction and the development of effective mechanisms to activate the development of rural communities.
