Factors and threats to food security in conditions of economic instability

The main groups of factors that determine the state of food security are identified. Threats to food security are identified. The dynamics of the main economic factors of food security in Ukraine for 2020–2025 are presented and characterized. A matrix for assessing economic threats to food security is constructed. The state and dynamics of production factors of food security in Ukraine during the period of martial law are presented and characterized. An analysis of institutional factors and their impact on food security in Ukraine in 2021–2025 is conducted. The dynamics of indicators of foreign economic impact on Ukraine’s food security (2021–2025) are presented and characterized. The correlation of the average annual exchange rate of the hryvnia to the US dollar and the food price index in Ukraine is determined. The impact of hydrothermal conditions on winter wheat yields in the arid regions of southern Ukraine is assessed. The dynamics of indicators of anthropogenic load and soil fertility restoration in Ukraine for the period 2021–2025 are presented and characterized. A matrix of threats to food security in Ukraine is constructed. It was determined that the most critical threats to food security in Ukraine include rising food prices, declining incomes, and disruptions to logistics chains. These factors have both a high probability of occurrence and a significant impact on the food security system, which determines their decisive role in shaping the level of economic security in Ukraine. A significant level of risk is also characteristic of climate change and import dependence, which can lead to long-term imbalances in the food system’s functioning. It was determined that Ukraine’s food security system is highly sensitive to economic and external shocks. The presence of numerous critical threats indicates insufficient stability in existing regulatory mechanisms and the need to improve them. The identified threats directly affect the state’s economic security by limiting the population’s access to food, reducing agricultural sector efficiency, and increasing socio-economic tensions. The results of the analysis provide the basis for developing an effective food security mechanism that should account for the identified factors and threats.
