Environmental risk management system of industrial enterprises

The article examines the theoretical and methodological foundations of environmental risk management for industrial enterprises under increasingly stringent environmental requirements and the digital transformation of the economy. The relevance of the research topic is confirmed by the growing impact of environmental factors on enterprise performance, their investment attractiveness and competitiveness, as well as the need to adapt to international standards and ESG criteria. The study aims to substantiate the theoretical and methodological foundations and to develop an environmental risk management system for industrial enterprises. The article defines environmental risks as a complex economic and environmental category that combines probabilistic characteristics and the consequential effects of economic activity on the environment. The economic consequences of industrial enterprises’ environmental impacts are systematized, including direct costs (environmental payments, fines, investments in modernization) and indirect costs (reputational losses, restricted access to markets, decreased investment attractiveness). The necessity of integrating environmental risk management into the overall enterprise management system and its strategic framework is substantiated. It is proposed to form the environmental risk management system as a multi-level integrated model that includes target, functional, organizational, and instrumental blocks. It is revealed that a key condition for the effectiveness of such a system is its integration into business processes, functional subsystems, and the enterprise’s strategic management. The study of the system’s structural components identified the need to combine traditional risk assessment methods with modern digital tools. The instrumental support for the environmental risk management system has been developed, which, compared to existing approaches, relies on risk analysis methods, monitoring systems, and digital technologies, thereby improving forecasting accuracy and operational decision-making. It is determined that implementing a risk-oriented approach within the environmental management system contributes to transitioning from a reactive to a proactive management model. In general, an effective environmental risk management system should be based on the principles of integration, adaptability, and prevention, combine the economic, environmental, and social aspects of enterprise activity, and ensure its sustainability in the face of increasing environmental challenges.
