The development of biotechnological production ensures the creation of high-quality food products, modern medicines, innovative solutions for agriculture, biomaterials, and bioenergy resources, as well as increasing the circularity of production processes. All these areas in a complex affect population health, well-being, and the quality of human capital. Under such conditions, an increase in the duration of active life, a decrease in morbidity, and an increase in demographic potential form the prerequisites for increasing labor productivity and the economic activity of the population. The purpose of the article is to examine modern trends in biotechnology and substantiate their role as a strategic direction for the innovative development of the national economy. The dynamics of registered technologies in Ukraine by application area were analyzed, showing that more than 73% of all registered technologies fall into the medicine area. In agriculture, registered technologies account for 3.2%, and in the food industry, almost 2%. The rest falls to other industries. Analysis of the global biopharmaceutical market showed that its volume in 2021 is estimated at 793,87 billion USD and is projected to grow almost 3 times by 2030, with an average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8,7%. It has been proven that biotechnology is a complex, interdisciplinary system that integrates scientific, technological, engineering, economic, and socio-ecological components to create innovative products and ensure sustainable economic development. The projected financing volume for the global biotechnology market has been implemented, indicating the strategic investment attractiveness of this sector and its decisive role in shaping the global innovation economy. At the same time, several problems have been identified that hinder the development of Ukraine’s biotechnology market. It was emphasized that improving legislative and regulatory frameworks and forming a long-term strategy for the development of biotechnology as a priority area of innovation and structural modernization of the economy will contribute to increasing financing for these technologies and stimulating their active implementation.

Keywords: biotechnology, innovation, strategic direction of development, national economy, AI, technological drivers.
