Abstract.

Introduction. The development of the agricultural sector of the economy has a positive effect on increasing Ukraine’s national GDP, as well as identifies some trends in the functioning of the economic environment of some regional socio-economic systems. Ensuring such development is due to the existing institutional environment, which has a positive impact on the sustainable development of the agricultural sector. The current state of the industry requires more active application of effective methods of stimulating economic development within the framework of existing institutional and neo-institutional theories.

The purpose of this article is to study of theoretical and methodological foundations of social institutions, their essence, state, impact on the functioning of the economic environment of the agricultural sector.

Results. The main functions of institutions in the modern economic system are specified. In terms of research methodology, the classification of institutions into formal and informal, as well as institutions of the first, second and third order is presented. Norms of law are an instrument of formalization of social relations, so they cannot be attributed to informal institutions. Moreover, informal institutions are a set of traditions, habits, rules of conduct, etc., which are inherent in this social environment not from a formal (legal) but customary point of view.

Conclusions. Studies have shown that institutions have certain rules of different types with their own characteristics for use in formal and informal settings. It is established that promising areas of formation and development of the institutional environment of the agricultural sector, their identification in terms of recruitment and structure of employment institutions should be studied through the prism of the problems of labor market development in rural areas.
